The timing was purely coincidental, but Phillip Bradshaw’s term as president of the Virginia Association of Counties couldn’t have been orchestrated any better.

The Isle of Wight County supervisor takes on the high-profile role just as Western Tidewater needs the attention of political leaders throughout Virginia. Even as he advocates the causes of the statewide county officials’ group, he can likewise promote his home region, which soon will lose its anchor employer: International Paper Co.’s Franklin mill.

Just this week Bradshaw met with Speaker of the House William Howell, R-Fredericksburg. Similar meetings with Gov.-elect Bob McDonnell and Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling are expected to follow.

Bradshaw, a veteran supervisor in Isle of Wight’s Carrsville District, earned the prestigious post because of his distinguished career in public service and his stellar reputation among colleagues across the state. We’re glad for him — and for Western Tidewater, which will benefit tremendously from his turn in the spotlight.
