ISLE OF WIGHT—Two people, including a 6-year-old boy, were flown to a Norfolk hospital following a two-vehicle wreck on Joyners Bridge Road at 2:34 p.m. Tuesday.

Virginia State Police Sgt. Michelle Anaya said driver Sally Winters was flown to Norfolk Sentara General Hospital. Winters’ condition was unavailable Tuesday evening because she was in the emergency room.

Anaya said the 6-year-old in Winters’ car was sent to Southampton Memorial Hospital to be stabilized and would be flown to Sentara.

Three other passengers in Winters’ car were being treated at SMH. The other driver, Taylor Revelle, 20, of the 2300 block of Scottswood Drive in Franklin, did not appear injured.

Trooper H.B. Johnson said Winters’ eastbound compact car was struck by Revelle’s 2000 Chevrolet Silverado pickup.

“The Silverado (pickup) came around the curve and ended up on the wrong side of the road and struck the Corsica (the car),” Johnson said. “(They collided) left headlight to left headlight. It was not a true head-on collision.”

Revelle was cited for reckless driving and not wearing a seatbelt, Anaya said.

Authorities said alcohol and speed were not factors in the crash, which occurred in Isle of Wight County about one-tenth of a mile from the bridge over the Blackwater River and the border with Southampton County.

Donald Winters, Sally Winters’ husband, said his 2-year-old grandson, Habin, was involved in the crash but wasn’t badly hurt.

“He’s bruised up from the car seat, but he’s fine,” Donald Winters said. “He’s a living testament that car seats work.”

But Winters said Habin’s 6-year-old brother was in surgery for his injuries.

“Apparently his face is pretty bashed up,” he said.

Donald Winters identified the other passengers as his two sons.
