COURTLAND—The Southampton High School girls defeated the Nottoway 66-38 Monday night in the first round of the Southside District tournament.
Southampton will host Prince Edward at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 16, for the semifinal round of the tournament.
The Lady Indians came into the tournament as the No. 1 seed and co-champions of the Southside District with a 14-4 overall record and a 12-2 record for district play. While Nottoway came in as the No. 8 seed for the tournament.
Leading the way for Southampton was Tenicia Joyner with 17 points. Regina Artis added 13 points, Talisha Jenkins scored 12 and Ronnie Powell netted 10.
Southampton was the first on the board with a tip-in by Joyner off an offensive rebound. With 14.4 seconds remaining in the quarter Artis hit a 2-pointer, giving the Lady Indians their first 6-point lead. The quarter ended with Southampton leading 19-13.
“I thought we came out playing a little sluggish to start off with,” said Lady Indians Coach Aronda Bell. “I thought at the end of the first half we started to turn up the defense, which allowed us to pull away and gave our other kids a chance to play and get used to playing.”
With 7:39 remaining in the half, Joyner made a lay-up in the process of being fouled. Her and-one attempt from the free-throw line was good, giving the Lady Indians a 22-13 lead.
With 5:13 left in the half, Nottoway’s Cati Snead ended the Lady Indians run that began late in the first quarter when they were down 12-13, with a 2-point shot in the paint. With 40.5 seconds left in the half, Artis hit a 2-point shot, extending the Lady Indians’ lead to 37-16, and within 8 seconds stole the ball and drove back down court for a fast break lay-up extending the lead to 39-16.
Southampton’s Latoria Parham closed out the half with a 2-point shot from within the paint make it 41-16.
“I pulled up two of our JV players,” said Bell. “They have played with us on and off throughout the year; this is just a chance for them to get ready for next year.”
