FRANKLIN—Southampton High School’s golf team claimed the top five spots to win its opening Southside District match at Cypress Cove Country Club on Monday.

Last year’s district champs were led by Billy Britton, who scored a two under on the 72-par, 18-hole course.

“He was outstanding on the back nine,” said Coach William “Buddy” Whitehurst. “He lit it up.”

A senior, Britton finished the first nine holes two over par and was four under par for the second nine.

Southampton seniors Lewis Mayes and Steven Rhinhard tied for second at 80 each. Senior teammate Jordan Francis placed fourth with an 81 and sophomore Brandon Munford took fifth with an 82.

The Indians’ winning team score was 311. Park View followed with 338. Scores for Prince Edward and Greensville weren’t available.

“I think they played better than the score represented,” Whitehurst said. “They missed a few putts that they should’ve made.”

Whitehurst hopes the Indians can defend last year’s district title, a first for Southampton during its 18-year golf history. The Indians also won the district tournament last year, sweeping the top three spots.

Southampton qualified six players for the region tournament, but none advanced to the state tournament.

“We have all seniors, and we’ve got a lot of golf left,” Whitehurst said.
