FRANKLIN—Franklin senior Grant Scarboro and Windsor senior Cody Reese tied for first during the opening Tri-Rivers District golf match on Tuesday at Cypress Cove Country Club.
Both scored a 46 on the par-36, nine-hole course.
Windsor won the match with a 229 followed by Franklin with 253 and Surry 256. Sussex didn’t have enough players to qualify as a team.
Other top finishers for Windsor were Sean Dejiacomo 58, Hunter Marshall 62 and Kyle Hollowell 63. For Franklin they included Tevin Sumblin 66, Clay Blythey 70, and Oakley Sthole and Tevin Boone, both 71.
Franklin took the district title last year after posting a 14-1 season and won the district tournament. Six players qualified for the region tournament, but none advanced to state.
Bronco Coach Dave Lease hopes to see Scarboro qualify for the state tournament this year.
“He really works hard,” Lease said.
He also believes that Scarboro or Reese will be this year’s district champion.
Windsor Coach Broc Smith agrees.
“They are the most level-headed and are the ones who are most likely to turn it around,” Smith said.
Windsor didn’t have enough players to field a team for last year’s district tournament, but has nine playing this year. In addition to Reese and Dejiacomo, Keith Dennison is also a returnee. Reese and Dejiacomo qualified for last year’s region tournament.
Two of Windsor’s players are eighth-graders so they cannot qualify for scoring.
Both teams played in a district match on Thursday at Dogwood Trace in Petersburg. Results were not available as of press time.
