Broncos run over Surry

Franklin – It was all Franklin Friday night at Armory Field as the Broncos took an easy 42 –14 win over district rival Surry in a non-district contest.
The Broncos’ Travis Lane scored on a 98-yard touchdown run on the Broncos first play of the game. Marcus Stephens scored on the two-point conversion to put the Broncos up 8-0.
The first quarter ended with an 8-6 Bronco lead.
The Broncos defense tightened up in the second quarter to keep the Cougars scoreless as the offense put 14 more points on the board following a 51-yard run by Marcus Stephens and a 4-yard run by Travis Brown. On both scores, Latrell Lane scored on the two point conversion.
The Broncos held a 22-6 lead at the half.
Receiving the second half kickoff, the Broncos suffered a penalty and started the opening drive on their own 4 yard-line. The Broncos running game went to work grinding it out to move the ball down the field. Terry Warren scored on a 6-yard run to put the Broncos up 28 – 6 as time ran out in the third quarter. Alison Cromwell ran in the two-point conversion and the score moved to 30 -6.
Latrell Lane broke a big run for 70 yards to advance the score to 36 – 6 with 10:21 remaining in the fourth quarter.
With 9:49 remaining in the game the Broncos crossed the goal line following a 77-yard Corey Porter interception return.
The Cougars scored on a 24-yard pass from Derrick Bailey to Deandre’ Davis. Dontrae Lyttle caught a pass from Timothy Marsh for the two point conversion.
The Broncos had a good night on the ground with a total of 434 yards rushing. Brown led with 98 yards followed by Lane with 70 yards.
Xavier Freeman led the team in tackles with six and JaVonte Blacknall and Travis Brown both had five.
Franklin Head Coach Darren Parker said after the game, “that he was excited about the third and fourth quarters.”
“Our kids might have bent but they didn’t break,” he said. “We will prepare physically, mentally and emotionally for our next game against Southampton.”
The Broncos will travel to Southampton High School at 7 p.m. Friday Sept. 7, for their next game.
