Bucks and Does, Pleasure Island to share space on Armory Drive

FRANKLIN—Bucks and Does Salon and Spa and Pleasure Island Salon have taken a stylish turn by joining forces at the latter’s site at Armory Drive.
Patty Rhodes, owner of Pleasure Island, said the idea had been forming for some time.
“I didn’t know her (Debbie Singleton, owner of Bucks and Does), but knew of her. It was just a month ago we finally had meetings to discuss the idea.”
“In our minds, it’s what we wanted,” Singleton said.
While the two salons are joining forces at one location, they remain separate businesses. Rhodes said there’s no definite idea for a new name, but that and a partnership are being contemplated for later.
Singleton and Allison Lilly handle the Bucks and Does side, and Liz Mullins and Heather Holland take care of Pleasure Island clients.
A nail technician is sought.
In addition to cutting and styling, as well as teaching clients how to maintain their look, there are also manicures, pedicures, coloring, body wraps, waxing, tanning and hair extensions.
“We’re all about details,” said Singleton.
Both women bring years of experience to their work.
Singleton was apprenticed at age 15 to Rudy and Kelly Hairstylists
“I assisted Kelly with greeting customers, coloring, setting appointments, etc.,” she said. “In 1984, I studied at the Paul Mitchell Partnership School in Virginia Beach, and learned all phases, marketing, recruiting and teaching. I recruited for 400 salons, setting up operations.”
Work dominated her life to the point she was not able to give quality time for her son, so Singleton sought a change that would give her flexibility and more time. So three years ago she founded Bucks & Does in Courtland.
Rhodes had been with State Farm Insurance for 18 years before opening Pleasure Island two years ago. State Farm recruited her back, but she’s able to do both by going back and forth to the salon, which is next door.
Bucks & Does will be open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. At Pleasure Island, hours are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday and Friday, and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
