CHARLOTTE, N.C.—After being down 30-28 at the end of the first half, Chowan University boys did not have the gas to defeat Johnson C. Smith University. The Hawks fell 67-60 to the Golden Bulls.
It was the second year for the Hawks to play in the 66th Annual Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association Basketball Tournament at the Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte, N.C. Chowan first-year Head Coach Dan DeRose used a mixture of bench players to make a run at the No. 4 seed Golden Bulls — the home-team favorite from Charlotte.
Quinton McDuffie got the Hawks to within two points of the Golden Bulls early in the second half, but Johnson C. Smith widened the lead to as many as 14 points with 6:28 remaining in the game.
Making a run going down the stretch, Chowan’s Charles Rhodes cut the lead to 62-58 with 1:31 left on the clock.
At 19 seconds, Rhodes tipped in another basket to make the game 63-60, but was forced to foul; the remaining baskets went to the Golden Bulls at the free-throw line to ice the win and advance to the next round.
The Hawks were led in scoring by Rhodes with 21 points and Aaron Allen with 10.
