SURRY—Southampton Academy’s varsity soccer team played Surry County High School to a 1-1 draw Monday.

Raiders freshman Evan Smolak scored a goal in the first half of the match, putting the team up 1-0 at halftime.

Surry tied the game early in the second half off a rebound from a ball that hit the crossbar from about 40 yards out.

SA Coach Jamie Weist said the windy conditions played a factor as the teams each scored with the wind at their backs.

“I thought we played a pretty good first half when we had the wind at our backs,” Weist said. “In the second half we looked a little flat, but overall getting a tie on their field is pretty good.”

The tie puts the varsity Raiders at 1-3-1 on the season.

The junior varsity Raiders picked up a 3-0 victory against the Cougars.

“We played well,” Weist said. “I thought we played our best game of the year.”

Colin Swinson, Paige Parker and Seth Edwards contributed goals in the shutout non-conference win.

The junior varsity team picked up its first win of the season, improving its record to 1-3.
