WILLIAMSBURG—Southampton High School seniors Billy Britton and Lewis Mayes have qualified for the Group AA Virginia High School League Golf Championships in Harrisonburg.

The state tourney will be Monday, Oct. 8, and Tuesday, Oct. 9, at Lakeview Golf Course.

Britton placed sixth and Mayes seventh during the regional tournament on Monday and Tuesday at Ford’s Colony Golf Course in Williamsburg.

Britton shot a 149, with a 73 on the par-71 course the first day and a 76 on the second day on a par 72-course. Mayes shot a 151, including a 75 on the first day and 76 on the second.

Southampton placed third out of eight teams with a 635 behind Jamestown with 613 and Culpeper with 626. After the first day, the Indians were in second.

“We played that course sight unseen and the other teams like Culpeper, James River and York play this course all the time,” said Coach Buddy Whitehurst. “It was a little of a disadvantage.”

Following Britton and Mayes were teammates sophomore Brandon Munford, senior Jordan Francis, sophomore Hunter Peck and senior Steven Rhinard.

Southampton for a second year in a row won the Southside District title.
