SHS runners post season-best times

EMPORIA—Despite most Southampton High School runners having season-best times during Wednesday’s Southside District cross country meet, few placed.

The boys’ cross country team placed third and remains one point behind Greensville for the district title with two meets remaining. The Lady Indians placed second and are three points behind district leader Park View.

Host Greensville won the boys’ meet with 36 points and were followed by Northampton with 54, Southampton 60, Prince Edward 91, Parkview 137 and Franklin 166.

Top runners for Southampton were senior Daniel Lowdermilk, fifth overall with a time of 19:29; sophomore Forrest South, seventh 19:41; junior Kevin Watford, 10th 19:57; freshman Cole Jarratt, 16th 20:58; sophomore Enoch Westover, 22nd 21:44; and senior Alex Dunlow, 26th 22:19.

Parkview won the girls’ meet with 23 points. Southampton followed with 34 points, Greensville 90 and Franklin 93.

SHS Senior Tabbitha Bruck took first overall with a time of 23:04 and was followed by freshman Jessica Fox, seventh 24:55; junior Kelsey Thomas, 11th 26:01; junior Holley Moore, 14th 26:54; freshman Mary Hudgins, 15th 26:58; freshman Sarah Giorgi, 19th 28:14; senior Megan Owens, 21st 28:35; and junior Amber Gurganus 22nd 29:08.
