Nixon strikes out 16 batters to lead SHS to victory

EMPORIA—Southampton High School’s baseball team defeated Greensville County 5-0 behind the strong arm of Billy Nixon during a Southside District game Thursday.
Nixon struck out 16 batters, including the first nine, and gave up two hits. He is 4-1 on the season.
The Indians tallied nine hits while taking advantage of some key Greensville errors.
The Indians plated one in the first inning, two in the third, and one in the fifth and sixth.
Josh Riddick in the fifth inning hit a clutch two-out single to plate Jack Bunn.
Nixon went 2-for-4 with a double, Bunn went 2-for-3 with an RBI and Josh Riddick went 1-for-3 with an RBI.
In action from Tuesday, Southampton defeated Nottoway 9-1 behind sophomore Zach Vann.
Southampton scored one run in the bottom of the first when Hayden Spalding scored on Bunn’s double to right center.
The Indians tallied eight hits, including a double and two triples, en route to a seven-run fifth inning to put the game away.
The Cougars pushed one across in the top of the seventh when the leadoff batter hit a double and later scored on a single.
Southampton had 10 hits and three errors.
Nottoway had four hits and three errors.
For Southampton, Brian Marks and Mason both went 1-for-3 with a triple and Vann went 2-for-3.
