Bruck, Lowdermilk win medals at district meet

EMPORIA—Southampton High School seniors Tabbitha Bruck and Daniel Lowdermilk received second- and third-place medals, respectively, during the Southside District Championship cross country meet on Wednesday.
Bruck finished the race in 23:40.94 behind Parkview’s Abby Janson, who won with a time of 22:58.36.
Lowdermilk ran an 18:55.31. Greensville High School’s Alphonso Boone won the race with a time of 17:59.22.
Bruck and Lowdermilk were among 12 from Southampton to qualify for the region meet on Wednesday, Oct. 31, in Fredricksburg.
Other Lady Indians who qualified and their overall placing and times were junior Holly Moore, sixth 24:50.19; freshman Jessica Fox, seventh 24:54; freshman Mary Hudgins, eighth 25:50.89; freshman Sarah Giorgi, 11th 29:09.02; senior Megan Owens, 13th 29:30.78; and junior Amber Gurganus, 14th 29:50.53.
Additional boys who qualified were sophomore Forrest South, fifth 19:22.81; junior Kevin Watford, sixth 19:24.33; freshman Cole Jarratt, 11th 20:43.48; and sophomore Enoch Westover, 13th 21:03.28.
Both Southampton teams finished second in the district meet and in season standings.
“We had a very good season this year and gave the district title to Parkview (girls) and Greensville (boys),” said Southampton Coach Scott Edwards. “We had the lead in points early in the year, but injuries hurt us and allowed them to catch us and eventually pass us for the titles.”
