ISLE OF WIGHT—Isle of Wight Academy has locked up the top seed in the Metro Conference softball tournament with a 6-4 win Thursday against Broadwater Academy.

Isle of Wight Academy improved its conference record to 10-0 and its overall record to 12-1. The Lady Chargers have a non-conference game against Windsor Monday, May 9, before playing its first conference tournament game Thursday, May 12, because of a first-round bye.

Sophomore Hailey Glover pitched a complete game and improved her record to 7-1 on the year.

The Lady Chargers struggled early in the game against Broadwater, committing four errors and allowing four runs in the top of the second inning. IWA stormed back and tied the game up in the bottom half of the inning.

“We struggled with defense,” Coach Chris Hooper said. “We didn’t make the plays we needed to.”

The Lady Chargers finished the conference season two games clear of second-place Broadwater — beating them twice — and three games ahead of Atlantic Shores Christian, a team they also defeated twice in the regular season.

The Lady Chargers are ranked second in Division 3 of the Virginia Independent Schools Softball Association behind undefeated Kenston Forest.

Isle of Wight outscored opponents by a total of 110 runs this season. The Lady Chargers allowed 32 runs while scoring 142.

“We’ve hit pretty well all year,” Hooper said.

The team’s only loss came in a 4-0 affair at the hands of Mathews High School on April 13.
