Voters in Western Tidewater overwhelmingly went for the Republican candidates in the major state races on Tuesday.

Republican candidate for governor Bob McDonnell won Isle of Wight County by an almost 2-1 margin, collecting 7,679 votes to Democrat Creigh Deeds’ 3,976 votes. McDonnell also won Southampton, 2,674-1,825.

Deeds squeaked out a victory in the city of Franklin, defeating McDonnell by a tally of 1,087 to 1,010.

Republican Bill Bolling, the incumbent Lt. Governor, cruised to re-election and won Isle of Wight and Southampton in the process. He defeated Democratic challenger Jody Wagner in those two counties by votes of 7,260-4,246 and 2,527-1,866, respectively. Wagner won Franklin, 1,114-949.

The results were similar in the race to become the state’s next attorney general, with Republican candidate Ken Cuccinelli besting Democratic candidate Steve Shannon. Cuccinelli won Isle of Wight, 7,322-4,129, and Southampton, 2,560-1,685. Shannon prevailed in Franklin, 1,056-992.

In other election news, several local politicians faced no opposition and were re-elected to their seats. Delegate Roslyn Tyler (D-Jarratt) ran unopposed for her 75th District House of Delegates seat. In Isle of Wight County, Phillip Bradshaw, who represents the Carrsville District on the Board of Supervisors, was re-elected with no opposition.

In Franklin, Dinah Babb and Brenda Rickman, who ran unopposed for treasurer and commissioner of the revenue, respectively, were re-elected.
