COURTLAND—The grand opening of Cattashowrock Town will be held Friday, Nov. 16, and Saturday, Nov. 17, at the Native Palisade Village on Bridge Road, Courtland.

The Cheroenhaka (Nottoway)  Indian Iroquoian Village is a replica of the one documented by William Byrd II of Westover on his visit to what is now Southampton County in April 1728.

Some 700 to 800 students will visit the village on Friday, and the Cheroenhaka (Nottoway) Indian Intertribal Corn Harvest Fall Festival Powwow will be held 9 a.m. to sunset Saturday. The grand entry will be held noon Saturday.

The day also will include children’s demonstrations and face paining, Native American arts and craft vendors, and refreshments, including fish and chips, Indian tacos, funnel cake, corn soup, buffalo burgers and Indian fry-bread. Chief Walt “Red Hawk” Brown will provide the history of the Cheroenhaka (Nottoway) Indian Tribe.

“Our tribe has met its three-year goal of clearing land and putting up the Palisade Village Cattashowrock Town,” Brown said. “Now we can start working on raising funds to build our Tribal Educational Center and Museum.

Representatives of the Archeological Society of Virginia, Nansemond Chapter, will identify Indian artifacts for those who bring them to the show.

Southampton County Native and Tribal Member Stan Piersa will demonstrate flint knapping.
