About a dozen United Methodist churches in Franklin and Southampton County are making an incredible effort this weekend to feed hungry folks they’ll probably never meet.

Under the direction of High Street United Methodist Church’s mission committee, some 60 to 70 people will pack 12,000 dehydrated meals for orphaned children in Honduras.

Each of the churches gave money to the effort and will provide manpower this weekend.

The mission committee is working with Stop Hunger Now, an international hunger relief organization that coordinates the distribution of food and other life-saving aid around the world.

Each meal costs 25 cents, so the churches had to raise just under $3,000 to provide the 12,000 meals.

Honduras is one of the poorest countries in the Western Hemisphere, according to the Association for a More Just Society. The United Nations reports that 49 percent of Hondurans live in extreme poverty, with 2 million, or nearly one out of every three persons, suffering from critical hunger.

So thanks to the folks from our area churches for helping the Hondurans.
