Hellyer’s triple, three RBIs lead TA to VCC title

RICHMOND—Martin Hellyer went 2-for-4, including a double, and hit three RBIs to lead Tidewater Academy to a win in the Virginia Commonwealth Conference championship game Saturday.
The No. 2-ranked Warriors defeated top-seeded Steward School 6-3 to win the VCC title at Richmond Christian.
Winning pitcher Josh Clarke got six strikeouts and was named the tournament most valuable player. Clarke pitched 6 ⅓ innings and Hellyer picked up the save after pitching two-thirds of an inning.
Losing pitcher Gary LeClair had nine strikeouts.
Also for Tidewater Academy, Matt Irving and Joey King both went 2-for-4 at the plate.
For Steward, LeClair was 1-for-3 with a home run, RBI and two runs.
Neither team scored until the fifth inning. Tidewater had seven hits and one error, while Steward had five hits and two errors.
TA improved to 17-4 overall and Steward, 23-4.
