FRANKLIN—Five Franklin residents were arrested after someone allegedly saw them stealing a piece of farm equipment from a lot near General Thomas Highway and Sunbeam Road outside Franklin.

The Southampton County Sheriff’s Office charged Julian Perry, 44; his son, Thomas Perry, 21; Paul Day, 46; Melvin Day, 48; and a 15-year-old boy.

Just after noon Monday, the sheriff’s office received a call about the suspects stealing a brush hog valued at $250, said Major Gene Drewery. They allegedly picked up the brush hog and loaded it onto a vehicle.

The dispatcher kept the witness on the telephone while deputies were sent out.

“The complainant observed the subjects leave with the piece of equipment and continued to give that information,” Drewery said.

Deputies stopped the vehicle with the brush hog on Delaware Road south of General Thomas Highway.

The owner was notified and identified the property as his.

“This is a prime example of cooperation between citizen involvement and law enforcement,” Drewery said.

All were charged with grand larceny. The Perrys also were charged with possession of marijuana. Melvin Day had an outstanding warrant from for possession of dangerous drugs.

The Perrys and Paul Day remain in Southampton County Jail on $5,000 bond. Melvin Day is in Southampton County Jail with no bond.

The juvenile was released to a parent.
