Murder suspect ordered to undergo psychological evaluation

ISLE OF WIGHT—An Isle of Wight Circuit Court judge has ordered a psychological evaluation to determine whether a Courtland man accused of killing his father and stepmother is competent to stand trial.
Judge Carl Eason Jr. on Wednesday granted a defense motion seeking the evaluation for Joseph Charles “Jay” Joyner Jr.
Joyner, 37, is charged in the deaths of Joe Joyner Sr., 62, and Sandra Joyner, 58, on April 26 at their Walters Highway home in Carrsville. Joe Joyner was found shot to death in the woods and his wife was found beaten to death inside the home.
Commonwealth Attorney Wayne Farmer is seeking the death penalty
Friends of the victims have indicated that money was the motive for the killings.
Joyner’s next hearing is set for Feb. 13.
