SOUTH HILL—What a welcoming party to the Southside District. Southampton High School took advantage of seven Bluestone turnovers and clawed the Bears 69-6 in the Indians first-ever football game in its new district Friday night.

The Indians blew out to a 35-0 lead with just 8:56 gone in the second quarter and the game was played with a running clock the rest of the way.

Andre Rawls scored three touchdowns in the first half and rushed for 97 yards on six carries. Saiquan Mason ran for two touchdowns, including one for 51 yards, and finished the game with 129 yards on nine carries. On defense, DeShawn Barner helped set up the Southampton offense with three fumble recoveries.

The Indians went off to the races early when Jaron White scored on a 24-yard run with 9:23 left in the first quarter. Luis Lino booted the extra point for a 7-0 lead.

At 5:08 of the first quarter, quarterback Billy Nixon ran in a touchdown from 1 yard out and Lino’s kick upped the Southampton (2-2, 1-0) lead to 14-0.

Minutes later, Rawls rambled 32 yards for a touchdown and Lino’s extra point kick put the Southampton lead at 21-0.

With 42 seconds left in the first quarter, Mason bolted 51 yard for a score. With Lino’s kick, the Indians were up 28-0.

Southampton scored five touchdowns in the second quarter and led 62-0 at the half. The score that started the clock running was a 16-yard touchdown run by Rawls and extra point kick by Lino with 8:56 to play in the half.

Bluestone’s lone score came with 7:16 left in the game when Steve Obst hit Bevonte Saunders with a 21-yard touchdown pass.

The Indians had 290 yards total offense while the Bears (0-4, 0-1) were held to minus 40 yards total offense.

“We scouted well, therefore we knew what they were going to do offensively, and we were well prepared on defense,” said Littleton Parker, Southampton head coach. “Andre and Saiquan had a really good night. The offensive line did a pretty good job.”

Southampton hosts Brunswick Friday at 7:30 p.m.
