FRANKLIN—Four Southampton High School wrestlers got their first varsity wins to help the Indians to a second-place finish in their pool during the third annual Matt Bryant Memorial Wrestling Tournament on Saturday at Franklin High School.

They included freshman Jacob Joyner in the 106-weight class, senior Lewis Mayes in 160, freshman Noah Dunn in 182 and freshman Chase Jackson in 285.

“We were real happy with these guys,” said Southampton Coach Buddy Whitehurst.

The Indians were 3-1, defeating Middlesex 54-27, Lancaster 54-30 and Essex 53-30 before dropping to tournament champion Lake Taylor 60-18.

Others who excelled were sophomores Paul Long and Tim Mason, in 132 and 145, respectively, and juniors Devine Fenner and Sam McDonald in 152 and 195, respectively, Whitehurst said.

“Everyone wrestled well,” he said. “You could see it in their eyes. They were really happy and so were their parents.”

Twelve teams competed in the MBM Duals, including Franklin.

For the Broncos, sophomore Alson Cromwell and junior Shane Walker were 4-0 in the 152- and 160-pound weight classes, respectively. Cromwell also won the award for the quickest pin, doing so in 10 seconds. Senior Xavier Freeman went 3-1 in the 138 class.
