FARMVILLE—The Southampton Academy girls’ basketball team will move on to the semifinals of the Virginia Commonwealth Conference Tournament after upsetting Fuqua School 47-41 Monday.

The Lady Raiders came into the tournament as the No. 5 seed with a 6-8 record in the VCC.

Fuqua was the No. 4 seed with a 7-7 conference record.

“It was another great defensive game,” said SA Coach Chris Pope. “It was a hard fought game.”

SA led 13-4 at the end of the first quarter and 25-17 at the half.

“We had foul issues and a few of our girls had to sit out during the second quarter,” Pope said.

Seniors Kate Wachsmann and Barclay Gatten and junior Morgan Pope fouled out of the game. Wachsmann with 5 minutes left in the game; Gatten and Pope with 4 and less than a minute to go, respectively.

“Our subs came in and played very well down the stretch,” Pope said.

The Lady Raiders will play No. 1 seeded Amelia Academy at 2:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22, at Richmond Bland College.

In action from Friday, SA defeated VCC opponent Richmond Christian 41-39.

“We played well defensively and it was a good team effort,” Pope said.

The Lady Raiders went 19 for 45 from the free-throw line.

“It was an up and down game, and our missed free throws is what made the game as close as it was,” Pope said.

Morgan Pope led the Lady Raiders netting nine points. Best, Gatten and eighth-grader Mason Pope added eight points apiece. Gatten also pulled down nine rebounds.
