WAKEFIELD—The Tidewater Academy girls’ basketball team on Tuesday defeated Southampton Academy 30-23 to advance to the quarterfinals of the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association State Tournament.
The Lady Warriors, 20-8, will take on Roanoke Catholic at 5:30 p.m. today, Feb. 27, in Roanoke.
“I thought we played great defense,” said SA Coach Chris Pope. “I don’t think that team’s been held to 30 points all year. It was a great game.”
The Lady Raiders were down 17-8 at the half, but rebounded, tying Tidewater 21-all in the fourth quarter.
“They outscored us the last four minutes of the game,” Pope said. “They got the lead and held the ball.”
Taylor Pruitt led the winners with 11 points; Cary Beahm added seven. Falon Williams led with eight rebounds and Beahm added five.
Leading the Lady Raiders was Sarah Best with seven points. Morgan Pope added six and Whitley Smith made five.
The Lady Raiders finished the season 12-14.
