FRANKLIN—During a six-week Upward Bound summer program at Paul D. Camp Community College, students had the opportunity to acquire knowledge about horses at River Birch Farm, owned by Ann and Chuck Gayle on Camp Parkway.

According to Upward Bound Director Travis Parker, the purpose was to expose students to the whole equestrian experience, which included grooming techniques and learning the anatomy of a horse.

In addition, the six rising seniors participating in the summer program were able to attain riding skills at the farm.

Kea Windsor, Erica Staton, Jelisia Artis and Jasmine Harrell, all of Lakeland High School, Kendra Powell of Southampton High School and Seleana’ Saunders of Franklin High School were the senior participants.

“This was the best thing ever,” Powell said about her experience.
