FRANKLIN—Led by Robert L. Tureman, associate professor of information systems technology and chief marshal of the Paul D. Camp Community College 40th annual commencement, students entered the PDCCC Regional Workforce Development Center on May 13 as the Southampton High School Band, under the direction of Stafford Claud, played “Pomp and Circumstance” by Elgar. The Rev. Dr. Carl Sweat Jr., pastor of Laurel Hill United Church of Christ and coordinator of the PDCCC Smithfield Center, gave the invocation.
Following a welcome and recognition of platform guests by A. Meredith Felts Jr., chairman of the college board, Dr. Paul Wm. Conco, PDCCC president, recognized Executive Secretary to the Vice President of Financial and Administrative Services Ruth Waldo, Financial Aid Officer Teresa Harrison, Associate Professor of Information Systems Technology Renee Felts and English instructor Ronette Jacobs as the PDCCC recipients of the Virginia Community College Association’s 2010 Showcase awards, which were announced last fall.
Conco also made the following presentations: the 2010 PDCCC Award for Excellence in Education to Jacobs; and the J. Paul Councill Jr. Community Service Award to Bobby Worrell, retired executive director of the Elms Foundation.
The president then introduced student speaker and honor graduate Sally Rensch of Carrsville.
Alumni Society members and student ambassadors were recognized by Conco, and following an introduction by Vice President for Institutional Advancement Dr. Patsy Joyner, S. Bernard Goodwyn, Southampton County native and justice of the Supreme Court of Virginia, gave the address.
