LAWRENCEVILLE—The Southampton High School softball team won 18-7 after sending 19 batters to the plate and having 14 score, in a wild first inning at Brunswick High School Tuesday.

The Lady Indians had 10 hits and three walks in that first inning.

“We hit the ball well and ran the bases very well,” said SHS Coach Susan Melbye. Offensively, we were very pleased with that first inning.”

After that first inning, the majority of the SHS starters were relocated to the bench.

“We want to make sure that all of the girls are ready to step in and contribute when called upon in the future and this type of situation gives us that opportunity to get them ready and get some at bats and time in the field,” Melbye said.

Megan Duck threw all five innings for the Indians, allowing only five hits over the five innings, and gave up seven runs, two of them being earned runs.

Those runs came on back-to-back extra base hits in the third inning, the latter a home run to left centerfield.

“(Megan) got a little loose there in the third and left a pitch up and the girl from Brunswick made her pay for it,” Melbye said. “If we can keep the ball down (from both of our pitchers) and play solid defense behind them, we have no issues scoring runs. You put those two things together and we can put together a nice little run.”

The Lady Indians, 5-1, will next travel to Greensville High School at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 23 in a Southside District game.
