The long of the arm didn’t just get longer, it got quicker when this week the Southampton County Sheriff’s Office launched its mobile application.

These days becoming high tech is the best way to keep up with the age of instant information associated with smart phones and other mobile devices. Southampton County is one of only two law enforcement agencies in Virginia using the application at this time.

Headed up by Chief Communications Officer J.L. Smith, the app is made available through Appriss Inc. and the Victim Information and Notification Everyday network.

The app will allow you to use your iPhone or Android to receive important emergency notifications, look up wanted subjects and research the sex offender registry and those incarcerated. Citizens can report crime tips as well. The notifications and alerts also provide offender information and automated notifications of offender releases.

The app gives access to a list of real-time warrants, each with the ability to be shared on social media so the community can help the deputies catch wanted criminals.

Use of this technology is an effective and convenient way for law enforcement to work with other agencies, solve crimes, assist with emergencies and connect with the public in new and rapid ways.

Kudos to the forward thinking of Southampton Sheriff’s Department. We hope the citizenry of the county will take advantage of this and download the app right away. It’s a new tool for residents and officers to work together for the safety of the entire county.
