Every year about this time, we dedicate a few words in this space to those who have taken up the fight and participate in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. Not surprisingly, due to the caring nature of Western Tidewater residents, local events are usually a huge success. This year appears to be no different.

The Isle of Wight/Surry event, scheduled for this Friday at Smithfield High School, has secured 55 teams, which are comprised of 565 participants, and has raised over $117,000. The Franklin/Southampton relay, which begins Saturday at Southampton High School, will include 21 teams with 228 participants. They have raised over $66,000.

Relay is important for several reasons. It gives survivors a reason to celebrate. It gives those fighting a chance to hope. It gives those who mourn a chance to remember.

The American Cancer Society and participants in Relay events all over the world have pledged to keep fighting until they find a cure. We pledge to support and promote their efforts until the day they do.
