Franklin—Mamie Scott Whitley, 97, passed away July 10, 2013 at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. Born in Carrsville on Sept. 17, 1915, she was a daughter of the late Herbert Hudson and Lillie Gardner Scott. Mrs. Whitley was predeceased by her husband, Julian Piland Whitley Sr., a son, Nelson Scottie Whitley, and three sisters, Sara Alice Scott, Lelia Lee Scott, and Nellie Scott Joyner and one brother, John O. Scott.
She was a member of High Street United Methodist Church in Franklin and was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great grandmother.
She is survived by her children, Glenda Whitley Helms-Sterling (Ken); Julian Piland Whitley, Jr. (Sandra) and Alice W. Jones (Tim); a daughter-in-law, Cathy P. Whitley; seven grandchildren, Peter W. Helms (Monique), Alan Keith Helms (Star), Jennifer Lynn Whitley, Rendy Whitley Reynolds (Matt), Sara Jeannette Stephenson (Mark), Sallie Rebecca Poland and Michael Scott Whitley (Kristen); 11 great-grandchildren, Amber Helms Ramirez (Hector), Courtney Leigh Helms, Makayla Danielle Helms, Zachery Conner Helms, Colson Scott Whitley, Benjamin Matthew Reynolds, Jackson Scott Reynolds, Julian Mark Stephenson, Christopher Scott Stephenson and Tucker Alexander Stephenson; and four great-great grandchildren, Juliana, Gabriel, Ximena and Victor Ramirez.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 13, at Wright Funeral Home with Rev. John Ashley officiating. Interment will follow at Southampton Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home and welcome flowers or memorial donations may be made to any favorite charity. www.wrightfuneralhome.org
