COURTLAND—The Southampton High School golf team began play on Aug. 12, and the team is now 10-2.

Southampton is in a new district, Tri-rivers, and is playing against Greensville, Franklin, Parkview, Sussex, Surry and Windsor.

Southampton is tied with Greensville for second in the division, with Parkview leading the pack. Southampton next plays Monday, Sept. 9 at Parkview.

Coach William Whitehurst said that for the past two years Southampton has been the champion in its old district, last year thanks to four really good seniors.

“We had two that qualified for state last year, including Billy Britton. Billy is on a golf scholarship at Chowan,” he said. “Another state qualifier was Lewis Mayes, who is at the Virginia Military Institute.”

Two other seniors also are away at college — Jordan Francis (Radford) and Steven Rhinard (Paul D. Camp Community College).

“They were a good group of kids,” he said. “We are trying to continue on, and hope to fill their shoes.”

This year, the players are doing well, including Brandon Munford, junior, and Junior Hunter Peck. Mumford is averaging 39 a match, playing 9-hole golf matches, while Peck is averaging 42 a match.

“They are improving each and every day,” Whitehurst said.

Junior Andrew Hauser, and three freshmen, William Newsome, Jordan Cox and Brendon Simms, are also on the team.
