FRANKLIN – Deaconess Laura P. Johnson of Coolspring Street, Franklin, VA was ushered into her Heavenly Home by her angels on Sunday, September 8, 2013, while a patient in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. On July 22, 1930, she was born in Southampton County, VA to Thomas and Claudia Powell.
Laura was a graduate of the Southampton County Public School System. For many years, she was employed by Raiford Memorial and Southampton Memorial Hospitals as a Licensed Practical Nurse. She was a member of David Temple A.M.E.Z. Church where she served on the Deaconess Board, Senior Choir, Mass Choir and the hospitality committee.
Laura was preceded in death by her parents, husband, George D. Johnson; son, Freddie Murphy; brothers, Johnny Powell, George Harris, James Harris and sister, Annie Butts. She is survived by a loving and devoted daughter who was by her bedside, Toni P. Hunt (Vandy); sisters, Shirley Lewis, Flossie Watkins of Baltimore, MD.; grandchildren, Shamia, Joseph, DeAndré, Pashawn and Chondra; three great grandchildren, special nieces and nephews, Ivy, Ann, Jada, Denise, DeWayne, William, Ricardo, Benjamin, Pat; sisters-in-law, Mary Curtis, Linda Johnson; brothers-in-law, Roosevelt Johnson; special cousins, Horace and Deloris Holley, close friends and Godchildren.
A homegoing celebration will be held at 4:00 PM on Friday, September 13, 2013, White Oak Spring Baptist Church, with Reverend Joseph Perry delivering the message of comfort; Reverend Melvin Wofford is pastor. The interment will be in Southview Cemetery. On Thursday evening, the family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6:00 – 8:00 PM. A traditional service with dignity will be conducted by Wm.
