Southampton loses to Park View, Sussex; falls to 4-3 on season

SUSSEX—Southampton fell Wednesday night to Sussex Central by a final score of 71-52.

“That game, we were in the game early,” said Coach Sharone Bailey. “But they went on a run in the second, and they were just killing us on the glass offensively.”

Bailey said that they missed 17 free throws and turned the ball over 21 times.

“That was pretty much the game,” he said. “They pounded on the glass, and were very physical.”

The Tigers came out and went up by 5 in the first quarter, by a score of 18-13. They put up 20 points in the second quarter, to improve the lead to 38-21. Southampton scored 15 points to Sussex’s 13 in the third. Sussex outscored Southampton in the fourth 20-15.

Shane Agunzo led the Indians in scoring with 16 points and 5 rebounds. Brandon Knight had 11 points and 3 steals.

 

Vs. ARGS

Junior forward Shane Agunzo had a career night Monday, putting up 40 points and collecting 12 rebounds in a victory against Appomattox Regional Governor School.

“He played a great game, and we’re checking the record books to see where he stands,” Bailey said.

Southampton came out strong in the first quarter, putting up 24 points to ARGS’s 7. By halftime, the score was 40-31. In the third quarter, Southampton increased the lead to 58-48, and the final score was 86-71.

Russell Ballance had 13 points and two assists. Darius Bell had 11 rebounds and 8 points. Hunter Peck had 11 points.

 

Vs. Park View

Bailey said the Indians just couldn’t find the basket in a 73-33 loss to Park View this past Friday.

Southampton shot 21 percent from the floor, missed 18 free throws, and turned the ball over 32 times. Bailey said you can’t win with those numbers.

“We started out slow, and we just couldn’t make a basket,” he said. “They went inside on us and it was over.”

Park View went up 12-6 by the end of the first quarter, and improved that score to 31-12 by halftime. Southampton was only able to add 6 more points in the third quarter, while Park View put up 19, making the score heading into the fourth quarter 50-18. Southampton put up 15 points in the fourth quarter, to Park View’s 23.

Marqi Eaton led in scoring with 6 points, while Agunzo had 7 rebounds and 5 points.

 

Southampton played Brunswick on Friday. The Indians will get another shot at Sussex on Thursday, Dec. 26 in the Brunswick Christmas Tournament.
