Southampton High School Indians go down in overtime

COURTLAND—The basketball game was not going well for the first three quarters of play for the home team on Jan. 3, as the Southampton County High School Indians faced off against the visiting Eagles of Greensville High School. Despite having 27 turnovers during the game, the Indians came back in the final quarter to force an overtime period before losing 67-63.
The Eagles opened the game and took a 17-9 lead over the Indians in the first quarter of play. By the 5-minute mark in the second quarter, LaSalle Beale of Southampton cut the Eagle lead to 21-23. But the Eagles fought back to push the score to 26-36 to hold the lead at the half.
In the third quarter, Hunter Peck for the Indians closed the score to 42-48, as he connected on two 3-point shots.
Indian head coach Sharone Bailey in comments after the game stated that in the fourth quarter, the Indians did settle down and got back into the game.
With 6:41 remaining in the game, Hunter Peck connected and was fouled on a three point shot. Hitting the foul shot, the score became tied at 48 all. The score stayed tied until the 3:53 mark when Marqui Eaton put the home team ahead 49-48. After a series of scoring by both teams with 1:16 remaining on the clock, the score was again tied at 54 all. Going under one minute Eaton on a basket put the Indians ahead for a moment at 58-56, but the Eagles answered quickly to tie it again at 58 all with 9.5 seconds left in the game.
The Indians had the ball and called for a time-out to prepare a plan. After getting the ball in play the Indians’ last-shot attempt for victory was blocked and the game went into overtime.
In that period, the home team went ahead 59-58 after Shane Agunzo connected on one of two free-throws. After that the Eagles edged ahead and had the lead for the remainder of the game.
In scoring the Indians were led by Peck with 24 points followed by Agunzo with 12 points.
Coach Bailey was pleased with his team’s play and remarked that he does see a lot of improvement with the players. The Indians at this point are 5-7 overall.
