POWHATAN—Southampton and Powhatan combined for 29 hits and 22 runs in Thursday’s Southside District Tournament championship game, which ended 13-9 in Powhatan’s favor.

Southampton senior Billy Nixon hit two home runs for five runs.

Southampton now heads to Tabb High School on Memorial Day to take on the Tabb Tigers at 4:30 p.m. The Tigers (15-7-1) are the No. 2 seed out of the Bay Rivers District after winning their tournament. Southampton (16-5) goes as the No. 2 seed from the Southside District. The time of the game has not been set.

Against Powhatan, Southampton in the first inning scored off Hayden Spalding’s solo homerun over the left field fence. Southampton left one man on in the inning.

Powhatan came up in the bottom of the first and plated three runs off sophomore Zach Vann. Powhatan hit through its first eight batters and scored three runs off three hits, an error and a walk.

Southampton was held scoreless in the second, and Powhatan put another three-spot on the board off two doubles, a single and a Southampton error.

Southampton then won the third inning, scoring two runs off Billy Nixon’s first homerun of the game as he drove a pitch deep to left center scoring two.

Powhatan scored one in the bottom of the third off two singles.

Southampton led off the top of the fourth as Tonee Hill and Josh Riddick drew walks. Jake Pope and Jack Bunn drove in

three more runs for Southampton.

In the bottom of the fourth, Powhatan scored two runs off two doubles and a single.

Southampton was held scoreless in the fifth as Powhatan scored one off two singles and a sacrifice fly.

Southampton was down 10-6 going into the sixth inning. Nixon came through with a three-run homer, plating Pope, who led off the inning with a double and Spalding, who

drew a walk.

The momentum was cut short after Powhatan picked off a runner on first and struck out the next batter. Powhatan quickly increased the lead to four in the bottom of the sixth off four hits.
