FRANKLIN—Coming off of a big loss against the Brunswick Bulldogs, Windsor girls basketball Coach Jeff Burchette said the Dukes wanted a win bad.

And they found one in Franklin on Monday night, as they out rebounded and played the young Broncos.

“I was pleased,” Burchette said. “I wasn’t sure how we would come out and respond after losing on Saturday to Brunswick, but we responded pretty well.

“We played well defensively. I thought we rebounded well, and got a lot of second chance points from that. We were very aggressive tonight.”

Broncos Coach Mona Sumblin said that while they would like to win every night, that it’s a rebuilding year and teaching the girls to play is what’s important.

“We are improving in spots in each game,” she said. “One day, we are going to put it all together.

“These girls are brand spanking new — most of them are ninth- and tenth-graders. I have one junior. I’m just glad to have a team.”

In the first quarter, the Dukes came out and put up 17 points, 7 of those scored by Bridgette Walton, while giving up 8 to Franklin — 6 of those points coming from Latrina Cross. In the second quarter, Walton led the Dukes to 12 points, scoring 8 of those herself, while Franklin scored 5.

The Dukes had a 16-point third quarter, where the scoring was pretty equally divided amongst the players, while Franklin scored 9. The fourth quarter was fairly low scoring, but the Dukes won it 8-7, as they cruised to a 53-27 victory.

Walton led the Dukes in scoring with 20, while Jazzmine Bynum scored 13.

“Overall, I thought the team played well,” Burchette said. “Glad we got this one, we really needed a win.”

On the Franklin side of the ball, Cross and Kayla Powell led with 11. Additionally, Powell scored all 7 points for the Broncos in the fourth quarter.

“Progress is a process is our motto,” Sumblin said. “We are just trying to learn the game and getting acclimated to play.”
