Summer schools OK’d for Southampton

COURTLAND—With high school graduation a month away, the Southampton County School Board adopted schedules for summer school during Monday’s meeting.
To start, Kelli Gillette presented details about the “Summer Quest: Portal to Success.”
This will be a 16-day remedial and interactive program for elementary school-level students. She described it as a “project-based learning experience for grades 3 through 7,” and added that the hands-on experience will integrate writing into the courses: Rocks, Minerals and Fossils; Air and Space; Oceans; Weather; Ecology.
“All are related to the Standards of Learning,” said Gillette.
The summer school will last from Monday , June 30 to Thursday, July 24 and last from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. All classes will be at Riverdale Elementary School.
The Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) course is “more inclusive” and open to 60 students in grades 5 through 8. Problem solving and critical thinking will be emphasized. STEM will take place at the same time, dates and location as the Summer Quest.
Aronda Bell outlined Southampton High’s summer school, which will last from Thursday, June 19 to Friday, July 11. Registration takes place June 17-18.
Two sessions are planned: 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 1 to 5:30 p.m. Students much provide their own lunch and transportation.
