ISLE OF WIGHT—No. 6-seeded North Cross pitcher Matt Doughty dominated No. 3 Isle of Wight Academy as the Raiders defeated the Chargers 7-1 in Isle of Wight on Tuesday.
North Cross from Roanoke was led by Doughty’s two hits, two RBI and two runs scored. Tanner McCoy also was 2-for-4, including a home run.
North Cross advances to a VISAA Div. III Tournament semifinal on Friday in Colonial Heights.
IWA was led by Matt Manner, Reid Taylor and Matt Herrmann, who each had two hits. Sophomore Jacob Mintz, who led the team this year with a .559 batting average, was 0-for-1 in four plate appearances.
Junior Adam Webb, the Chargers’ leading pitcher this season, suffered his only loss of the season against three wins, giving up three earned runs in four innings of work.
Doughty scattered eight hits and stranded three IWA runners in the fourth inning, and again in the fifth and sixth.
