With Memorial Day weekend upon us, many will be looking for things to do, while many have plans.
There’s also the folks who will remain home to host Memorial Day services to honor those who paid the ultimate sacrifice — their lives while serving in the military.
While Boykins and Ivor held services earlier this month, there are several planned for the weekend.
Here’s a few:
· S. Waite Rawls III, president and executive director for the Museum of the Confederacy in Richmond, will speak during the Memorial Day service sponsored by Charles R. Younts American Legion Post 73. It will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Poplar Springs Cemetery, Franklin.
· A Memorial Day service will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at Drewryville Cemetery. Tom Spizzirri, pastor of Hebron Baptist Church, will be the speaker.
To begin the service, the bell at Thomas Memorial Baptist Church will ring in observance of The National Moment of Remembrance. Those attending are asked to bring a lawn chair. Drewryville Woman’s Club is sponsoring the event.
· Memorial services will be held 3 p.m. Sunday, May 29, at Hollywood Cemetery in Newsoms. The Rev. Michael Baugham, pastor of Boykins United Methodist Church, will give the memorial address. The Rev. Jason Wise, pastor of Newsoms Baptist Church, will assist. Linda Drake, Michelle Wise and Blaine Britt will provide music. In case of rain, it will be held at Newsoms Baptist Church.
· Jack Stutts, candidate for Southampton County sheriff, will speak during the Memorial Day service at 11 a.m. Monday at Capron Cemetery. In case of rain, it will be held at Capron Baptist Church.
So, take a few minutes out of your day to attend a service.
