COURTLAND—The New Kent Trojans came away with the win on Memorial Day to advance in the Conference 25 (Colonial Rivers) Baseball Tournament.

The Trojans defeated the Southampton Indians 6-4 in 8 innings. Senior Tanner Winters struck out four in six innings while giving up two runs on five hits. The Indians were able to go up 1-0 in the bottom of the third. With two outs in the inning, junior Hunter Peck was able to dump a double in down the left field line. Winters drew a walk and senior third basemen Jack Bunn drove in Peck with a RBI single to right field.

The Indians were able to extend the lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the fourth. Junior second baseman Brandon Sprinkle hit a one-out single up the middle. Josh Lowe then came up with two-outs and laced a single to right to put runners at first and third. Sophomore outfielder James Williams was able to hit a groundball that the New Kent shortstop could not field that plated Sprinkle.

The Trojans, however, came roaring back in the top of the fifth, as they were able to score two runs on two singles, a walk and sacrifice bunt.

The scored stayed tied at 2 until the top of the eighth inning.

New Kent was able to score four runs in the top of the eighth on 2 singles, a double and a perfect suicide squeeze.

The Indians fought back in the bottom of the eighth with a walk by Lowe, a double by Peck, and singles from Winters and Bunn.

The Indians rally came up two runs short as the Trojans held the lead at 6-4 to end the ball game.
