FRANKLIN—The old Winn Dixie lot might once again become a place where people can get food in the near future.

Franklin Police Department Captain Tim Whitt said he got permission from the property managers that the Food Bank of Southeastern Virginia could distribute food there.

“It has a big lot, and it will be perfect for a big trailer to sit there and not block and traffic or cause any issues,” Whitt said. “Everyone was very pleased about the new location.”

The Food Bank had been asked to not distribute at Forest Pine Apartments on Thursday due to traffic problems that were being caused due to the construction on Hunterdale Road. Whitt said on Friday that the trailer could not be placed on the road there.

Mary Anne Vargas, the chief philanthropy officer with the Norfolk-based Food Bank operation, said that they had not yet received written notification from the property owners, but that they were excited about the possibility of a new location. She said she did not anticipate any problems with getting the agreement from the owners.

“We appreciate the police department in helping us find a place,” Vargas said. “We are excited and just appreciative that we are able to do what we do. We are looking forward to serving the needs in the area again.”

She said that this was a community effort.

“When people step forward like this, it really makes our job easier,” Vargas said. “It’s wonderful to see people step up to serve the community that we all live in.”

She said that they are planning on distributing again on July 11 from 9:30 to 11 a.m.
