CARRSVILLE—There comes a time in the lives of every family when the possessions of a deceased loved one must be confronted. As the surviving sibling of three in his family, disposing of his late sister’s estate has fallen to Sid Barrett.

“Everything must go,” he said of the contents in the family home that belonged to his late sister, Katharine Barrett. He said she had died last October while she had been living in East Pavilion. They had one other sister, Iva Mary Hopkins of Blacksburg; she had also died last year.

A tag sale has been scheduled for 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, June 12-14; and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, June 15.

The farmhouse, three outbuildings and land will be dealt with later, said Barrett. But he knows already that those too will also eventually be sold.

“We decided not to keep it in the family,” he said. “We live in Raleigh.”

The ‘we’ to whom Barrett refers are his wife, Carole; and their children who are living in other places. With the exception of a few small mementoes, no one wants anything else.

“We have no need,” she said. “We didn’t take any old stuff.”

That includes “tons of pictures” and furniture — some believed to be handmade.

“She was a real collector,” he said of Katharine. Dolls, their furniture and Christmas decorations are among the many items she enjoyed. Clothes, books, music and collectibles will also be sold.

And her collecting of these things and much more extended to filling three outbuildings on the property, which at one time was a farm.

“Dad never actually farmed. It was a sharecropping arrangement. He was a foreman for the Camp lumber mill for 50 years.”

Dad and mom to Iva Mary, Katharine and Sid were Iva and Robert Sidney Barrett Sr.

“Daddy came from a large family of 12 children, 9 who lived to adulthood,” he said. “The Barretts were a very prominent family. The Barretts were very involved in Franklin Baptist Church for years.”He also referenced that the Barrett’s Landing is named for that family.

Iva was an only child who came from a family in Whaleyville of old Nansemond County, which is now part of Suffolk.

The father was approximately 73 when he died in 1965; Iva was about 83 when she died in 1989. After her death, the land was divided into three parcels; Katharine got the house. Following her retirement from teaching in northern Virginia, she came back here to live.

Sid remembered one of his earliest memories of her.

“Katharine and I were real buddies — she was two years older — we played in the woods and streams. One time we climbed up to a place. “’Just jump,’ she said.

“I couldn’t,” he recalled with a smile. “I didn’t.”
