Margaret Mead once said, “Never underestimate the power of a small group of committed people to change the world. In fact, it is the only thing that ever has.”

We are reminded of this truth by a group of Franklin students who have embarked on a mission to divert the flow of trash away from our oceans and into local recycling bins.

The students, who penned an article for last Sunday’s edition of The Tidewater News, (“Franklin students impact ‘Ocean Soup’,” July 13, 2014) have made the decision to not only to raise awareness about a great environmental challenge, but also set into motion a plan to address it. The members of P3 (Project Pollution Prevention) have surveyed businesses in downtown Franklin to devise a cost-effective plan to increase participation in recycling programs and will make a formal proposal to members of the Downtown Franklin Association in August.

As P3 seeks to expand their efforts throughout the entire community in the upcoming year, we encourage them to call on us to help keep the community informed of their efforts. We also look forward to being willing participants in their program.
