FRANKLIN—While officers were out on foot patrol on Monday in the area of the Mariner and Britt streets, they saw a person acting suspicious, said Capt. Tim Whitt, spokesman for the Franklin Police Department. When they approached him, he fled while concealing an unknown item in his shirt.
The officers gave chase but were unable to catch him. Deputies from the Southampton County Sheriff’s Office were brought in with a tracking K-9, and the dog followed the suspect’s scent to Oak Street. A resident informed officers that the suspect had been picked up by a person in a car.
However, one of the officers knew the suspect.
Officers were able to obtain warrants for the man and went into his residence. When approaching his house, however, the suspect fled out the back door. Officers pursued the suspect and apprehended him on Chestnut Street.
Continued investigation led to the recover of more than three ounces of marijuana packaged for distribution.
Demetri Trivette Wiggins, 20, of the 400 block of S. High St., was charged with felony possession with intent to distribute marijuana, resisting arrest and obstruction of justice.
Wiggins was remanded to Western Tidewater Regional Jail without bond.
