The stands at Southampton High School were packed on Tuesday night as the rivalry game between the Windsor Lady Dukes and the Lady Indians was once again a “Dig Pink” match. This fundraiser game was in heartfelt honor of those fighting breast cancer and in loving memory of those who have left us too soon.

Even with the home team losing to the Lady Dukes for the second time this season 3-1, Lady Indian coach Amy Davis was proud of her team. In remarks after the game she said, “Our girls played hard. They gave it all that they had, but it just wasn’t enough tonight.”

She was more overjoyed that the team raised $1,126 in this game for support of breast cancer.

In game one of the best of five, the Lady Dukes jumped out early 9-1 and held the lead the entire game to take an easy win 25-7.

In the second game, the Lady Indians came alive and put up a good fight. But after tying the game seven times, the Dukes high-leaping Kellie Matthews spiked the game winning point for a 25-21 win.

The Lady Indians reversed everything in game 3 and opened with a 6-4 lead. After eight ties in this game and the score 25-all, Lady Indians player Emma Drake served the winning points as the home team won, 27-25.

For game 4, the Lady Dukes held the lead for most of the game. This game was only tied one time at 7-all.

Afterward, the Lady Dukes held a comfortable lead for the remainder of the game. Once again Matthews put away the winning point as the Lady Dukes won 25-19.

The Lady Dukes Head Coach Stacey Griffith in comments after the game said, “We played well, made a few silly mistakes but we recovered and were able to outscore them. Southampton came out hard in the third game and they wanted it just as bad as we did.”

The Lady Dukes record is now 10-2 placing them in second place, while the Lady Indians record is 7-5 and that’s good enough for third place in the district.
