WINDSOR
The past few weeks have included a pair of career nights for the Windsor High School Lady Dukes, and they’ve also won their last two, helping them push their record above .500 to 6-4.

On Monday night, the Dukes won a close one against the Lady Bulldogs of Brunswick High School 58-54. Head Coach Sherry Ashburn said hitting free throws helped make the difference.

Monday was also a career night for Bridgette Walton, as she paced all scorers with 28 points — 10 of them from the free throw line. Andrea Magba and Vonquisha Turner also contributed 10 and 9, respectively. Magba led the Dukes with 8 rebounds.

The Sussex High School Lady Tigers traveled to Windsor on Jan. 9 and were handed a 59-50 loss. Ashburn said ball control helped earn the Dukes the victory, as Windsor only turned the ball over four times. Walton had an up-until-then career night, pacing scorers with 27 points. Turner and Taijii Skeeter contributed 14 and 12 points in the effort.

The Dukes traveled to King William to face the Lady Cavaliers, who defended their home court with a with a big 65-38 win. Walton led the Dukes with 12 points, and Turner contributed 10.

Before the break, on Dec. 19, Windsor hosted the Park View Lady Dragons, and the Dukes lost a close one 61-56.

“The Lady Dukes played hard, but turnovers cost us the game,” Ashburn said. “We had 8 to 10 turnovers.”

In the losing effort Magba had a career night with 24 points. She also contributed 14 rebounds. Walton had 15 points.

“The girls continue to work hard through the season,” Ashburn said. “They are open-minded, ready to learn new plays and are giving it their all.”

As long as the girls continue to give it their all, the coach said she’d be happy.

“I have a saying that I put up in the locker room — it says, ‘Nothing beats a failure but a try,’” Ashburn said. “As long as they are out there giving it all of their effort, then that’s all I can ask. I’m very pleased with the season so far, and I’m looking to finish strong.”

Due to ice, Wednesday’s game against Appomattox Regional Governor’s School will be rescheduled. On Friday, the Dukes are set to face Southampton in Windsor.
