MURFREESBORO, N.C.
The Chowan University Hawks and Lady Hawks seemed headed toward a clean sweep over the visiting Bowie State University Bulldogs on Saturday, Jan. 24, at the Helms Center on the campus of Chowan University. The Lady Hawks made easy work over the Lady Bulldogs in a lopsided 69-47 win. But after leading in scoring for the majority of the game, the Hawks suffered a heartbreaking loss on a three-point shot at the buzzer to lose 58-57 to the visiting team.

The Hawks flew out quickly in the opening minutes of the first half with an 8-0 lead. But after one tie and six lead changes, the home team took a 23-20 advantage to the locker room. The Hawks hit 14 of those points in the paint as Josh Mellette led the effort for the Hawks with six first-half points.

Opening the second half of play the Hawks pushed their lead to 28-23 at the 17:34 mark. The Bulldogs trying to bite back tied the score twice at 28- and 30-all. With 14:36 remaining the Bulldogs went up briefly with the score 34-33. After the fourth tie of the game at 39-all, the home team pushed their lead to the highest point of the half at 47-40 with 5:45 remaining to be played.

As time was winding down, both teams continued to trade baskets with the score close. The Bulldogs edged ahead 53-52 with 2:10 left to play. Going into the stretch, the home team was up 57-53 with 14 seconds left on the clock. However, a foul by the Hawks Mark Anthony Buright put the Bulldogs Zafir Williams on the line to shoot 2 free throws. Williams connected on both to put the score at 57–55 in favor of the Hawks. With the Hawks getting the ball with 9 seconds left to play, the Bulldogs called a 30 second timeout. As the Hawks threw the ball into play, a questionable quick call by a game official resulted in a jump ball situation. The possession of the ball went to the Bulldogs. On the throw in by the Bulldogs with 7 seconds on the clock, Justin Beck connected on a three-point basket at the buzzer for the win.

The Hawks had three players in double figures. Josh Mellette led with 14 points, Mark Anthony Buright scored 12 points and Warren Powers had 11 points. The Bulldogs had only one player in double figures and that was Justin Beck with 15 points. The Hawks are now 4-5 in the CIAA and 10–8 overall.

For the Lady Hawks game it was as easy as eating a piece of cake. The home team leaped out in front from the very beginning and never looked back. At the 5:35 mark in the second quarter, the Lady Hawks were up to their highest lead of the game of 24 points with the score 32-8. By the end of the first half, the Lady Hawks were cruising with a 34-14 lead.

Action picked up in the second half for the Lady Bulldogs, but the closest that they were able to close the score was within 13 points at the 15:17 mark. And scoring was much closer, as the Hawks only edged the Vikings by two total points in the half. But even with the surge, they were still behind the Lady Hawks in both halves, as the home team cruised to the final horn and victory.

In scoring, the Lady Hawks had three players in double figures. Dhyamond Crenshaw and RyJae Anderson both scored 15 points, respectively. Jordan Payne contributed 10 points. Ty-Nita Baker led the Lady Bulldogs with 16 points and Donia Naylor had 14 points.

The Lady Hawks sit at 8-9 overall and 4-3 in the CIAA.
