To the Editor:

Cain [Madden] did a wonderful job covering our recent “Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Keep UNITY in our CommUNITY” walk at PDCCC.

About six years ago, my family and I attended a “MLK Keep the Dream Alive” walk and program at Chowan University. When we learned that there wouldn’t be a walk the following year, my daughter looked at me and said, “We can do one in our area! No one does anything here to commemorate Dr. King on MLK Day.” {As a native of Ahoskie, N.C., I’d always attend functions there that commemorated Dr. King, but now as a resident of Southampton County it was time to bring about change, and do something here.}

So, as a scout, LeAndra took it to her troop meeting and we started to brainstorm ideas. Scouts Janay and Tora Sweat went to their church family and pastor, and the scouts were on a roll. That year, we sent out letters, emails, and an announcement in the TN to reach out to all to support the cause. It is my wish, my dream, that such an event could be more diverse. Godly people are to love all people, and Dr. King fought for all. The girls of Girl Scout Group No. 5073 are taught that we are all God’s children and we are all put here to make a positive difference.

It is also a time when others come together to join hands for the good of the cause. Let’s knock out disrespect, poverty, and injustice in a nonviolent way just like Dr. King did.

On behalf of the scouts and parents of Boykins Girl Scout Group No. 5073, I would like to thank the local chapters of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc., and Dr. Paul Conco and the Student Activities Program at PDCCC for helping to spearhead this year’s event.

Thank you also to the other organizations, churches, schools, and residents of the Franklin and Southampton County communities for coming out to help keep Dr. King’s dream alive.

Spread the word, and save the date (MLK Day in January) for next year’s “Keep UNITY in our CommUNITY” walk.
