With the regular season complete and, likely, only one game remaining overall, Southampton girls basketball coach Littleton Parker is excited for what the future holds for his team. He often points to the youth — and lack of depth — as his team’s downfall, but also believes that it’s one reason to have a positive outlook.

“This year, we start a ninth-grader, two sophomores and two juniors, so we have a chance to grow,” Parker said.

The player with the highest prospects, though, is Jordan Lee. The sophomore forward scored a game-high 20 points last Friday night against Surry, although it came in defeat. She also pitched in 16 points in two losses to Colonial Heights early this week. Lee has averaged a team-high 12.2 points per game over the last five contests, something that hasn’t gone unnoticed by her coach.

“She’s had some real good games down the stretch,” he said.

Even though they ended the regular season on a five-game losing skid, the first-year head coach said his Lady Indians have continued to improve all season.

“We just ran into some real good ball clubs at the end of the year, and we just haven’t been able to handle the pressure they put on us real well because of our immaturity,” he said.

The Lady Indians are scheduled to start the TriRivers Conference Tournament on Tuesday afternoon, but the opponent had not been named as of deadline.

“We’ll try to get the kids ready,” Parker said. “We practice three times before then, so we’ll prepare to do our best.”
