David Blythe, the chief of the Hunterdale Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department, said Western Tidewater is full of giving people.

Back when he was diagnosed with a rare blood disease, the community helped him get through the woods. Now, Blythe would like to see the people continue to come together for Franklin Police Department’s Cpl. Albert Herdeg. He was injured back during December when he fell from a ladder. Due to the injuries, the single father of three may never walk again.

“We just thought he could use a helping hand, and we are willing to do it, to help out as best we can,” Blythe said. “It is a small community, and everybody helps each other.”

On Saturday, April 18, at 4 p.m., the Hunterdale Volunteer Fire Department will host a fundraiser fish fry for Herdeg. Blythe said he’d like tickets to be ordered by April 8, so that they could get an idea of how much they would need in the way of supplies.

The fire department will order extra, but Blythe cannot guarantee a plate to someone who does not order early.

On the menu will be whiting filets, hushpuppies, baked beans and cole slaw. Blythe said he expects most will want take out, but that there will be some availability at the station for people who want to dine in.

Tickets are $7 a plate and can be obtained from any firefighter at the station. Tickets are also available at Franklin Police Department, through Lt. Kenneth Barham; at Bobby’s Muffler and Tire Center on Armory Drive; as well as Bronco Federal Credit Union and Donna’s Hair Flair, both on Stewart Drive.

“It is a good thing to do to help this guy out who has three kids, and he has a long road to go,” Blythe said. “We want to help him out in anyway we can.”
